## Running scans

When working with DevOps, you have the option to launch scans automatically.

An **automatic scan** is launched when you commit a work item associated with a repository that has an instance in Quality Clouds. It is essential to have [quality gates](https://qualityclouds.com/documentation/qc/quality-clouds-for-salesforce-appexchange/quality-clouds-for-salesforce-appexchange/)enabled to launch automatic scans.

If the **scan is still running**, you won't be able to promote the item, and an **error message** will appear.

If the scan has finished, then it will be possible to promote the item.
